JL Closets is an established industry leader with over 35 years of experience delivering premium custom closets and bespoke home storage solutions. We pride ourselves on fine craftsmanship, functional innovation, and precision design.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Custom Millwork Designer to join our remote team. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in custom millwork design, architectural detailing, cabinetry, built-in furniture, residential interiors, and space planning.
This role focuses on designing and developing custom millwork and cabinetry solutions for residential spaces, including built-in cabinets, wardrobes, wall paneling, entertainment centers, libraries, home offices, vanities, kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, closets, and other architectural woodwork.
The designer will translate project requirements, architectural plans, measurements, sketches, and design concepts into detailed 2D drawings, 3D models, renderings, shop drawings, and production-ready specifications. Designs must balance aesthetics, functionality, construction feasibility, material selection, and manufacturing requirements.
The adecuado candidate understands how custom millwork moves from concept to fabrication and installation, with the technical ability to develop accurate drawings and practical designs that meet quality standards and production capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Custom Millwork Design: Develop detailed designs for built-in cabinetry, wardrobes, wall units, entertainment centers, libraries, home offices, vanities, wall paneling, shelving systems, and other custom residential millwork.
- Architectural Millwork & Detailing: Design custom architectural woodwork, including decorative panels, moldings, trim details, integrated storage, cabinetry features, and specialty built-in elements.
- Space Planning & Layout Development: Evaluate architectural plans, room dimensions, site measurements, and existing conditions to create functional and visually balanced millwork layouts.
- 2D & 3D Design Development: Prepare detailed floor plans, elevations, sections, construction details, 3D models, renderings, and design presentations.
- Design Concept Development: Translate client requirements, architectural drawings, sketches, and design references into customized millwork solutions that align with the overall interior design concept.
- Custom Cabinetry Design: Develop cabinet configurations, drawer systems, shelving, doors, panels, storage compartments, hardware layouts, and other cabinetry components.
- Technical Drawing & Shop Drawings: Produce accurate, dimensioned shop drawings, elevations, sections, assembly details, material specifications, and fabrication documentation.
- Material & Finish Selection: Specify suitable materials, wood species, veneers, MDF, plywood, laminates, melamine, finishes, hardware, and accessories based on design requirements, durability, and intended application.
- Millwork Construction Knowledge:
Apply an understanding of cabinet construction, joinery, panel thicknesses, edge banding, door construction, hardware placement, clearances, assembly methods, and installation details.
- Design Visualization: Create professional 3D renderings and visual presentations that communicate design intent, proportions, materials, finishes, and construction details.
- Manufacturing & Fabrication Feasibility: Ensure designs are practical for fabrication and account for material limitations, CNC machining requirements, production methods, assembly processes, and manufacturing capabilities.
- Installation Coordination: Consider site conditions, wall irregularities, clearances, dimensions, mounting requirements, and installation constraints when preparing millwork designs.
- Design Review & Quality Control: Review drawings, dimensions, material specifications, and construction details for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and production readiness.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Identify and resolve design conflicts, measurement discrepancies, construction challenges, and fabrication limitations.
- Design Revisions: Update drawings, models, and specifications based on project changes, field measurements, client requirements, and feedback from internal teams.
- Cross-Team Coordination: Work closely with sales, production, engineering, and installation teams to clarify design requirements and ensure projects are properly documented for fabrication and installation.
- Design Standards & Process Improvement: Maintain consistent technical and design standards, organized project documentation, and efficient millwork design workflows.
