: Java Backend Engineer – Microservices & Kafka

Job Summary

We are looking for a skilled Java Backend Engineer to develop and maintain scalable backend services for mobile applications used by millions of American Express cardholders worldwide. The role focuses on building a Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) service layer , delivering high-performance APIs and seamless mobile experiences.

The adecuado candidate should have strong backend engineering fundamentals, experience with microservices, REST APIs, Kafka, and databases, along with a passion for clean code, performance optimization, and solving complex technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain scalable server-side applications and microservices.
- Build and enhance REST APIs for mobile application service layers.
- Develop asynchronous, event-driven services using Kafka.
- Design and integrate SQL and NoSQL database solutions.
- Write clean, reusable, testable, and maintainable code.
- Refactor legacy applications and improve code quality and performance.
- Implement unit testing, debugging, and performance optimization.
- Participate in CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and continuous integration.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, QA engineers, and other developers.




- Integrate existing backend services and contribute to technical design decisions.
- Identify opportunities to improve application reliability, scalability, and user experience.

Required Skills
- Strong experience in Java backend development and server-side application engineering.
- Hands-on experience with Microservices architecture .
- Strong knowledge of REST API development and integration .
- Experience with Apache Kafka and asynchronous processing.
- Experience working with SQL or NoSQL databases; exposure to both is preferred.
- Understanding of data structures, design principles, and standard backend engineering practices.
- Experience with unit testing, debugging, code refactoring, and performance tuning.
- Familiarity with build tools, CI/CD pipelines, and continuous integration.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in an agile environment.

Preferred Skills
- Experience with Kotlin.
- Familiarity with Gradle.
- Knowledge of GraphQL (GQL) and RAML.
- Experience developing Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) services for mobile applications.
- Exposure to legacy system integration and large-scale distributed applications.

Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
