About the Company
Our client is a technology company with a small, distributed team. The environment is hands-on and collaborative, with direct communication, shared problem-solving, and opportunities to take ownership.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Systems Administrator with hands-on cloud experience to maintain infrastructure, evaluate cloud performance, and support deployments.
The work centers on provisioning and testing cloud instances, keeping existing environments current, and improving how infrastructure is organized and maintained. AWS is the primary environment, with performance evaluations also taking place across Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud.
You’ll work closely with the technical lead and take ownership of responsibilities currently shared across several team members. This is an internal-facing role with no customer calls.
Strong systems administration skills are the priority. Some scripting or automation experience is valuable, but advanced DevOps expertise is not required. There is room to grow into more automated deployment work over time.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Performance Testing
- Provision and configure cloud instances across different providers and instance types.
- Run established benchmarks to compare performance against the team’s requirements.
- Document results clearly so the team can make informed infrastructure decisions.
- Support recurring evaluations as new cloud instance options become available.
Infrastructure Administration and Maintenance
- Administer and troubleshoot Linux-based cloud environments, primarily in AWS.
- Keep cloud instances and supporting infrastructure updated and operational.
- Migrate existing configurations and workloads to newer instance types when needed.
- Track provider notices, required upgrades, and upcoming changes, and coordinate action before they disrupt operations.
- Maintain a clear inventory of instances, their purpose, and their configuration.
- Investigate outdated or unused resources and coordinate upgrades or cleanup with the technical team.
- Maintain practical documentation for recurring tasks, configurations, and infrastructure changes.
Deployment Support and Automation
- Support application and content deployment processes alongside the technical lead.
- Use scripts to reduce repetitive infrastructure and operational tasks.
- Work with cloud APIs to support provisioning, testing, and maintenance.
- Troubleshoot deployment and environment issues with the engineering team.
- Help identify and implement opportunities to automate more of the deployment process over time.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of systems administration experience, including hands-on cloud operations.
- Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
- Direct experience provisioning, configuring, maintaining, and upgrading AWS instances.
- Working knowledge of cloud networking, access permissions, and security configurations.
- Ability to investigate infrastructure problems, evaluate options, and follow through on solutions.
- Clear written and verbal English for technical discussions, documentation, and progress updates.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with a small technical team.
- A proactive approach to learning unfamiliar tools and resolving issues.
- Reliable availability during agreed US Eastern working hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Python scripting experience, particularly for automation or working with APIs.
- Experience with Bash, PowerShell, or other scripting tools.
- Exposure to Azure, Google Cloud, or Oracle Cloud. Experience with all four providers is not required.
- Experience running performance benchmarks or comparing cloud instance types.
- Familiarity with deployment automation, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, or containers.
- Experience supporting a software product or working in a small engineering team.
How You’ll Work
You’ll do well here if you take initiative, ask clear questions, and communicate issues early. The team values direct, constructive feedback and people who can explain a problem, consider alternatives, and help decide the next step.
You should enjoy hands-on systems work and want to build your cloud and automation skills as the role develops.
