Drafter / Takeoff Specialist – Commercial Roofing, Cladding & Architectural Sheet Metal
Role Overview
We are looking for detail-oriented Drafters to produce shop drawings and material takeoffs for commercial roofing, cladding and architectural sheet metal projects. Your takeoffs jump-start procurement so Project Managers can review, finalize and release material orders months before field measurements are available. We welcome candidates with experience in roofing, cladding, or sheet metal, or any combination of these. Candidates will be matched to project types based on their background.
Workflow
- Project is awarded and handed off from estimating to the PM.
- Drafter prepares shop drawings and completes the initial material takeoff from the same set, working primarily from contract/architectural drawings (DWG/PDF).
- Takeoff is reviewed with the team; Project Managers review and finalize before any order is placed.
- Takeoff/cut list is delivered to the PM as an organized Excel sheet (plus Autodesk layout exports where useful) so materials can be released to external suppliers.
- Turnaround is set per task and project scope. Tasks can range from a few hours to multi-week drawing sets.
Key Responsibilities
- Takeoffs: Perform quantity takeoffs from architectural and engineering drawings. Roofing: square footage, membrane (e.g., TPO/PVC), insulation board counts, fasteners, edge metal, flashing. Cladding and sheet metal: panel counts and lengths, clips, trims, flashing, coping, master-sheet optimization for ACM/MCM, and linear footage for field roll-forming.
- Cut lists & orders: Build supplier-ready cut lists and order data in Excel or via Autodesk export, following the templates and examples provided.
- Shop drawings: Produce shop drawings, roof plans, panel layouts, elevations and details in AutoCAD; mark up in Bluebeam.
- Review & release: Walk takeoffs through with the team, incorporate PM feedback, and release materials once finalized.
- Quality: Verify quantities against drawings, engineering, manufacturer specifications and local codes before release.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: Drafting experience is the core requirement. An experienced superintendent / senior superintendent who has installed systems and done their own takeoffs is also a strong fit.
- Industry knowledge: Experience in commercial roofing, cladding, or architectural sheet metal (one or more) is preferred but not required. Experience in both roofing and cladding/sheet metal is a plus. Must read architectural drawings and understand material limitations (e.g., trims, panel widths, sheet optimization).
- Technical skills: Proficiency in Autodesk/AutoCAD (team uses 2025) and Bluebeam (or Adobe Acrobat Pro); strong Excel skills.
- Core attributes: High attention to detail, accuracy under deadlines, and ability to manage multiple projects at once.
- Communication: Clear written and verbal English for working with Project Managers and the wider team.
Tools, Equipment & Device Requirements
- Software seats: A license/seat will be provided for every program required for the role (e.g., Autodesk/AutoCAD, Bluebeam).
- Own device: If working on a personal computer, it must be able to run AutoCAD and Bluebeam reliably. Devices will be checked against the specifications below during screening.
- Monitors & accessories: Candidates must provide their own dual-monitor setup and associated accessories (keyboard, mouse, headset with microphone, webcam, cables/docking).
Schedule & Work Arrangement
- Employment type: Full Time
- Days: Monday through Friday
- Working hours: US business hours, Central Time (9:00 AM–5:00 PM CT; 8:00 AM–4:00 PM CT also acceptable)
- Location: Fully Remote
