Vamos Academy
Buenos Aires
We run an accredited TEFL course in Buenos Aires and we are looking for the person who teaches it.
This is not an English teaching job. Your students are adults who want to become English teachers, most of them from abroad, most of them with no teaching experience at all four weeks before they walk out qualified. You are the reason that works.
The course you would be running
Four weeks, intensive, on site at our campus at Maipú 464. Input sessions run 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
Accredited by the International TEFL Accreditation Council, so the standard is externally defined and you have to hold the line on it.
Ten hours of observation per trainee, in real classes at our school and online.
A minimum of ten hours of assessed teaching practice per trainee, with real English students in front of them.
Trainees arrive at eighteen and over, native speakers or C2, from recent graduates to people changing career in their forties.
What you would actually do
Teach the input sessions.
Methodology, language awareness, lesson planning, classroom management, assessment. Live, in a room, with people who will ask you why.
Run the teaching practice.
Set it up, watch it, and give feedback that a nervous person can actually use on Wednesday after being told on Tuesday that it did not work.
Assess honestly.
Written assignments and observed lessons against the accreditation criteria. Passing somebody who is not ready is the one thing this job cannot do.
Keep the course current.
The materials, the timetable, the observation slots. You will find things that have not been updated in a while, and fixing them is yours.
Hand graduates on.
Many of them go straight into teaching with us or with the schools we work with. You will know who is ready for what, and that judgement is worth money to everyone involved.
What we look for
A recognised teaching qualification and real classroom time behind you. CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, a profesorado, or an equivalent, plus several years actually teaching adults.
Experience training or mentoring other teachers,
even informally: observing colleagues, running workshops, inducting new staff, supervising a practicum.
English at C2 or native level, and the language awareness to answer the grammar question you did not see coming.
The right to work in Argentina and the ability to be on site in the centre of Buenos Aires.
A real advantage:
a DELTA or Trinity DipTESOL, an MA in TESOL or applied linguistics, experience as a CELTA tutor, or Cambridge and IELTS examiner experience. If you have any of those, say so in the first line of your application.
Spanish is not required to do this job, since the course runs in English. It helps outside the classroom, and we will not hold a lack of it against you.
Hours and pay
Course cycles run through the year, so the work comes in four week blocks with preparation either side. We are open to a full time arrangement or to a per cycle one, and we would rather build it around a strong candidate than advertise a shape nobody fits. Concrete terms, hours and pay are discussed during the selection process and you will have them in writing before any interview.
About Vamos Academy
Vamos Academy has been teaching in Buenos Aires since **** and in Málaga ****, plus online and in companies. Our students rate us 4.9 out of 5 across 1,187 Google reviews and we hold a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice award for ****. People come to us from more than 40 countries, and the TEFL course is one of the reasons a good number of them stay in Argentina afterwards.
Questions we get asked
Do I need a DELTA?
No. It is a strong advantage and it will move you up the list, but we care more about whether you can watch somebody teach badly and tell them why, kindly and precisely, in ten minutes.
Would I also teach English here?
Only if you want to. Some trainers like keeping a couple of their own classes, and there is room for that. It is not a condition.
What happens between course cycles?
Preparation, materials work, observations, and the graduates who need a hand landing their first job. We will be honest about how much of that there is when we talk about hours.
