Junior Mission Systems Engineer (f/m/d)

About Satellogic

Satellogic is a vertically integrated Earth Observation company that designs, manufactures, and operates satellite systems, delivering decision-grade insights at scale to government and commercial customers.

We build space systems end-to-end, from satellite design and manufacturing to launch and on-orbit operations, giving us the ability to deploy quickly, operate reliably, and support persistent monitoring across regions and priority areas. Our approach moves customers beyond one-off imagery toward continuous awareness and alert-driven decision-making, with adaptable pathways that can evolve from managed monitoring to full satellite ownership and sovereign control.

Our technology supports a wide range of use cases across climate monitoring, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, defense and intelligence, helping organizations detect change, manage risk, and plan with confidence.

With a team distributed across five countries, Satellogic brings together expertise in satellite engineering, software development, data science, manufacturing, operations, and go-to-market. We’re a group of purpose-driven builders who value ownership, curiosity, and execution—and who work with humility, honesty, and empathy.

About the Team The Mission Engineering and Planning Team is chartered to transform strategic goals into optimally designed and operated constellations, ensuring every fleet operates at its maximum potential. This team is an exciting and diverse group responsible for mission analysis and design, performance optimization, and the lifecycle management of the Mission Planning System.

Within the Mission Planning System, the team is responsible for planning and scheduling services that define all activities - including imagery captures, ground station connections, and orbit design - for our growing constellation of satellites. Working in this team entails the design and implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms that solve complex combinatorial and geometric-orbit-related spatial optimization problems.

About the Position

We are looking for a Mission Planning Engineer to join our team. This role is focused on the algorithmic side of the Mission Planning System: designing, evaluating, and improving the logic that schedules captures, balances constraints and resources, and maximizes constellation performance.

This is not a generic backend role. The emphasis is on optimization, simulation,

and planner behavior under real operational constraints, while writing production-quality Python code, integrating it with the production framework, and collaborating closely with the software engineers who own the surrounding infrastructure.

The role reports to the Mission Engineering and Planning Team Leader and collaborates closely with the Systems, AOCS, Flight Dynamics, and Software Development teams.

Responsibilities

- Design and improve planning algorithms for scheduling, resource allocation, opportunity selection, satellite behaviour modeling, and other mission-planning problems under combinatorial, geospatial, and orbital constraints.
- Analyze planner behavior and mission performance using simulations, production cases, and trade-off studies to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement.
- Translate mission goals into technical planner logic, including constraints, heuristics, scoring functions, and evaluation metrics.
- Develop simulation, analysis, and debugging tools that make it easier to reproduce planner decisions, explain outcomes, and validate changes.
- Contribute production-quality Python code for algorithm implementations, features to increase capacity, experiment tooling, and the libraries that support planner development.
- Partner with backend engineers to integrate improvements into operational services used by mission operations and other internal stakeholders.

Skills and Qualifications

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related technical field.
- Demonstrated mastery of Python development, additional experience with the Django framework is highly valued.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and PostgREST is highly valued.
- Experience working on complex algorithms in areas such as planning and scheduling, search, combinatorial optimization, operations research, or GIS/geospatial optimization.
- Familiarity with modern software development workflows such as Git, testing frameworks, CI/CD, and Docker.
- Excellent spoken and written English,

with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.

About You

- Algorithmically strong: You enjoy formulating hard real-world problems and turning them into workable models, heuristics, and decision logic. Eager to try state-of-the-art computer science techniques into real world problems.
- Analytical: You are comfortable moving between theory, simulation, debugging, and operational evidence.
- Detail-oriented: You are committed to technical rigor, reproducibility, and high-quality engineering standards.
- Collaborative: You enjoy cross-disciplinary teamwork and are comfortable working with both software engineers and aerospace specialists.

Location The preferred location is Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cordoba, Argentina or Montevideo, Uruguay.

Diversity Commitment

Satellogic values diversity and inclusion and is an equal opportunity employer. We are convinced that hiring and developing top talent from around the world for any given discipline will drive innovation, generate new solutions, and deliver a superior product to our global customer base. We work to build an equitable and inclusive environment in which all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, or background, can come together to do their best work.
