Fordham University: Office of the Provost: Arts & Sciences: Philosophy Location: Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Campuses Open Date: Oct 24, 2023 Salary Range or Pay Grade: $8798 Description The Philosophy Department of Fordham University accepts applications for part‑time Non‑Tenure Track (NTT) faculty to teach in its "Philosophy of Human Nature" and "Philosophical Ethics" classes on a rolling basis. Based on scheduling needs as well as qualifications and availability, successful candidates may be offered up to two sections of "Philosophy of Human Nature," a required Core course that focuses on central metaphysical and epistemological questions surrounding human nature, with readings from classical thinkers such as Plato and Descartes along with thinkers from under‑represented groups in philosophy; or "Philosophical Ethics," which focuses on major normative ethical theories underlying moral decision‑making in our everyday lives, with readings from classical thinkers such as Aristotle and Kant along with thinkers from under‑represented groups in philosophy. We seek instructors who can foster engaging, equitable teaching and learning environments in concert with Fordham’s Jesuit mission.
Part‑time NTT instructors at Fordham are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU Local 200), and specific terms of employment, including minimum per‑course rates, are set by the Adjunct Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Information for Adjunct Faculty. Part‑time NTT faculty may teach a maximum of two courses per semester at either or both of Fordham's two main campuses at Rose Hill (Bronx) and Lincoln Center (Manhattan), based on department need.
Please note when applying that Rose Hill has a larger student body, and staffing needs are often concentrated there. Candidates are welcome to specify campus preference in their application materials while noting that priority may be given to those who prioritize Rose Hill or are open to teaching at either campus. Qualifications - A terminal degree in Philosophy (PhD or MA) is required for new teaching hires in Philosophy.
- A minimum of one year of teaching experience at the college or university level.
- Experience successfully working with and teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students.
- Demonstrated commitment to student‑centered best practices in the teaching of Philosophy.
