About Open Philanthropy is hiring a full-time remote Program Officer for Science and Global Health R&D; to support one of the world’s most impactful biomedical philanthropy portfolios. Working within the Global Health Science and R&D; grantmaking team, the role will help shape high-impact vaccine and product development strategies—especially around Strep A and malaria—as well as broader global health R&D; investments.
The organization, known for rigorous, impact-focused giving, has recommended over $4.5B in grants to date, with this team awarding over $100M annually. Reporting to Program Officer Katharine Collins, the new hire will conduct analytical research, evaluate scientific opportunities, engage experts, and guide funding decisions, with the opportunity to take on increasing leadership over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and Grant Investigations
- Review scientific literature, analyze data, and evaluate technical feasibility across vaccine R&D; pipelines.
- Identify promising candidates for Strep A vaccine development across academic, nonprofit, and industry settings.
- Conduct expert interviews and synthesize insights to inform funding recommendations.
- Produce detailed grant write-ups, analyses, and back-of-the-envelope calculations (BOTECs).
- Grant Management and Portfolio Oversight
- Track grantee progress, assess milestones, and contribute to renewal or follow-up decisions.
- Conduct grantee check-ins and provide analytical support across the portfolio.
- Distill lessons learned to refine future strategy.
- Strategic and Analytical Support
- Work closely with senior leadership to sharpen and expand global health R&D; strategies.
- Monitor global research landscapes, identify emerging opportunities, and map pipeline gaps.
- Contribute to strategy documents, internal analyses, and donor communications.
- External Engagement
- Represent Open Philanthropy at conferences, scientific workshops, and meetings.
- Build relationships with researchers, product development partnerships, and funders.
Eligibility
- 5+ years of experience (excluding graduate study) in fields such as immunology, microbiology, infectious disease, vaccine development, or related biomedical sciences.
- A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (preferred, but not required).
- Strong analytical and quantitative reasoning skills, including comfort evaluating scientific data and assessing potential impact.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially in conveying complex scientific ideas.
- Strategic creativity, comfort with uncertainty, and openness to “hits-based giving”—funding high-upside opportunities even with low probabilities of success.
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural fluency when working with global partners.
- Ability to travel for conferences, grantee meetings, and team gatherings.
- Ability to overlap several hours per week with U.S. Pacific and U.K. time zones.
Compensation & Benefits
- Total baseline compensation: $188,255.37
- $165,255.37 base salary
- $23,000 unconditional 401(k) grant (U.S. hires)
- For international hires, compensation is provided entirely as salary.
