About Alta Advisors
Alta Advisors is a strategic finance and accounting firm serving venture-backed startups in deeptech, hardtech, and applied AI.
We operate as an embedded, external accounting and finance partner to our clients, owning core financial workflows so founders and operators can focus on building their businesses.
Role Overview
We are seeking an Accounting Manager to own the monthly close and core bookkeeping workflows for a portfolio of client companies.
This is a senior, execution-oriented role within a professional services firm.
The Accounting Manager operates autonomously, serves as the primary accounting lead for assigned clients, and is accountable for accurate, timely financials.
This role reports to the Lead Controller and works closely with staff and senior accountants who support transaction processing and preparatory work.
Execution follows accounting policies and standards established by the Lead Controller, with accountability for close quality, issue resolution, and client-facing delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Own and drive monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes end-to-end for multiple client entities, including planning, coordination, review, and final delivery across single- and multi-entity structures.
Serve as the primary day-to-day accounting lead for assigned clients, with accountability for close quality, issue resolution, and timely delivery of GAAP-compliant financial statements and audit-ready workpapers.
Manage and review accounting workflows across revenue recognition, COGS, payroll, inventory, accruals, fixed assets, balance sheet reconciliations, and compliance activities (e.g., ****s), ensuring adherence to internal controls and US GAAP.
Oversee and review bookkeeping and transaction-level work performed by supporting staff, including AP, expense coding, cash application, and general ledger hygiene; provide clear feedback and maintain consistent quality standards across clients.
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve accounting issues independently, applying sound professional judgment in situations with incomplete or ambiguous data, and escalating to the Lead Controller when appropriate.
Lead client onboarding and accounting takeovers, including historical cleanup, system configuration, and establishment of close-ready workflows in early-stage or evolving environments.
Maintain close timelines by executing standardized workflows and process improvements established by the Lead Controller, while proactively identifying risks, process gaps, and practical enhancements for adoption.
Collaborate with client stakeholders to obtain required data, clarify transactions, and resolve open items, producing clear written documentation (workpapers, summaries, internal memos) to support efficient review and client communication.
Required Qualifications
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant ownership of monthly close.
Prior experience in an accounting firm, bookkeeping firm, or outsourced accounting services environment managing multiple clients concurrently.
Experience supporting start-ups and/or growth-stage businesses, including exposure to multi-department operations and satisfying external reporting requirements (e.g., investors, lenders, or auditors).
Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, including practical experience with standards such as ASC 606, ASC 842,
accounting for inventory and fixed assets and multi-entity consolidation.
Deep experience with QuickBooks Online and strong proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets.
Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously, manage competing deadlines, and deliver consistent results across multiple accounts.
Experience reviewing work, mentoring junior team members, and maintaining quality standards in a team-based environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (C2 fluency), with comfort communicating directly with clients.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA or equivalent certification.
Big 4 (audit or operational accounting) or other public accounting background.
Experience working with finance, payments, payroll, spend management, and operational systems that integrate with core accounting systems, including tools such as Bill.com, Brex, Ramp, Gusto, Rippling, and customer or revenue systems (e.g., CRMs and billing platforms) that serve as upstream inputs to accounting and close processes.
Demonstrated experience supporting a range of business models, including hardware or manufacturing-oriented companies, SaaS or recurring revenue businesses, and project-based or services-driven models.
What to Expect
Fully remote role within a distributed team.
Responsibility for multiple concurrent client closes and overlapping deadlines.
Periods of increased workload during month-end and quarter-end close cycles.
High degree of ownership, trust, and autonomy, with support from a strong accounting team.
Why This Role Is Compelling
Exposure to a wide range of venture-backed startups, business models, and operational challenges.
Opportunity to operate as a true accounting owner and trusted partner to founders and operators.
Collaborative environment with experienced finance and accounting professionals.
Meaningful responsibility and impact within a growing professional services firm.
