PRINCIPAL DATABASE ENGINEER
AND DATABASE SYSTEMS ARCHITECT

Svitla Systems Inc. is looking for a Principal Database Engineer and Database Systems Architect for a full-time position (40 hours per week) in Argentina.

Our client is a company that provides AI-powered solutions designed to streamline legal work.

You'll own the database layer for a rapidly scaling SaaS platform. It is a hands-on, production-critical leadership role focused on stabilizing, optimizing, and evolving a PostgreSQL-based system under real-world load. As customer usage accelerates, the platform is encountering performance bottlenecks, observability gaps, and operational challenges that require deep technical expertise and decisive ownership. It is not a traditional DBA role. You will operate as both the technical authority and the escalation point, responsible for everything from real-time incident response to long-term database architecture strategy. This role is critical to the platform's stability and scalability. You will directly impact system reliability, developer velocity, and customer experience by transforming the database layer into a high-performance, observable, and scalable foundation.

This role has alignment and/or a large overlap with the Pacific Time Zone. High ownership with on-call expectations. Availability for critical incidents outside standard hours when required.

We need someone who can step into an environment where:

- Systems are scaling faster than expected;
- Observability is incomplete;
- Production issues occur, but root causes are unclear.
- External vendors are too slow to respond and bring immediate clarity, structure, and control.

Requirements

- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in database engineering, infrastructure, or database reliability engineering.
- Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including:
- WAL behavior and tuning;
- Query planning and execution;
- Locking, concurrency, and transaction isolation;
- Replication and failover mechanisms.
- Proven experience in diagnosing and resolving complex production issues under load.
- Understanding of designing and operating high-availability, distributed database systems.
- Strong understanding of observability, monitoring, and performance diagnostics.




- Expertise in performing deep root cause analysis beyond surface-level fixes.
- Knowledge of multi-region database architectures at scale.
- Knowledge of AWS, Azure, or GCP database services.
- Experience building migration governance frameworks and tooling.
- Strong experience in programming (Python, Go, or similar).
- Knowledge of CDC pipelines, sharding strategies, or large-scale data systems.
- Familiarity with high-growth SaaS environments.
- Has strong intuition from real production experience.
- The ability to quickly determine what is actually happening in a system.
- Be comfortable operating under pressure.
- Takes ownership of outcomes, not just tasks.
- Strong collaboration with engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

- Own the performance, reliability, and scalability of the database layer end-to-end.
- Diagnose and resolve complex production issues in real time (WAL spikes, replication lag, I/O bottlenecks, query degradation).
- Lead incident response and root cause analysis.
- Participate in on-call rotation and act as the escalation point for database-related failures.
- Design and evolve a distributed PostgreSQL architecture across regions and availability zones.
- Define strategies for high availability, failover, and data consistency.
- Lead initiatives around sharding, partitioning, and horizontal scaling.
- Drive capacity planning and long-term scalability.
- Build and refine database observability (metrics, alerting, diagnostics).
- Ensure the team is monitoring meaningful signals, not just collecting data.
- Tune PostgreSQL internals (WAL, vacuum, indexing, query execution)
- Establish migration governance frameworks that include CI/CD checks, rollback strategies, and deployment sequencing.
- Define best practices for schema design, indexing, and query patterns.
- Ensure safe, scalable database changes across engineering teams.




- Build internal tooling to support safe migrations, performance diagnostics, and developer self-service.
- Implement guardrails that allow teams to move quickly without compromising data integrity.
- Partner with engineering leadership on database strategy and roadmap.
- Influence architectural decisions across teams.
- Mentor engineers and elevate database best practices across the organization.
